Brand Media Strategy: Balancing Editorial and Performance

A brand media strategy that blends editorial and performance: media products, YouTube and creator partnerships. Plus where small teams should start.

Hey there,

Happy Friday! Last week, I joined Brian Morrissey on The Rebooting Show to talk through how we're building HubSpot's direct media strategy.

Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous going into it. I don't do a ton of interviews like this, and I wanted to make sure I represented the team well. When it dropped, I listened back (twice) just to be sure. Grateful for the support from the HubSpot Media crew. It really helped.

The full episode is now live, but if you're short for time, here's a quick recap.

Why build media products instead of branded content?

We're building standalone media brands (The Hustle, My First Million, Mindstream, Masters in Marketing) with their own voice, value, and distribution. They're media products designed to earn trust and build weekly habits. The goal is to attract top-of-funnel audience months (or years) before they're ready to buy.

How does editorial independence drive long-term value?

Our approach blends editorial thinking with performance marketing. We've made it clear that our content will be data-informed, but editorial-grade. Meaning content teams focus on building high-quality newsletters, shows, and series. Marketing's job is to layer in lead-gen, not interrupt the audience experience. It's a balancing act, but it works. We're investing in building audiences.

Why is YouTube a future growth channel for B2B brands?

We've gone deep on YouTube. Not just podcasts, but industry explainers, educational how-to's, and product tutorials. Why? YouTube offers discovery, reach, and action. It's not only the second largest search engine, it's now the #2 streaming platform in the U.S. behind Disney.

Do creator partnerships work for B2B?

Creator partnerships work, when done correctly. We've done over 200 creator deals across podcasts, newsletters, and YouTube. Not influencer campaigns. Not transactional. These are media partnerships based on editorial alignment and shared audience. We've seen a 30% decrease in CPL v Meta/Google investments. Better audience fit and stronger content performance.

If I were starting from scratch

For smaller teams or early-stage companies:

  • Start with a newsletter: weekly, editorial-led, owned-audience
  • Add YouTube: focus on educational explainers or expert interviews
  • Create one lead-gen asset per quarter: think premium content (utility, report, on-demand video).

The media model doesn't have to be a massive investment. It's a mindset shift.

Thanks for checking out the episode. Send me a note afterward. Would love to know what you think. The team is building something exciting. More to come.

Until next time ✌️
Kyle
